Self-care - Ideas for a more beautiful everyday life
Buzzwords like self-care and mindfulness sound strong and resonant, but for many of us, they are more like unicorns we chase after in everyday life.
Self-care is not a fleeting trend, but an important part of our modern, hectic, and jam-packed lives. It is something we do for our own health. We have therefore collected some ideas and inspirations for you. Have fun trying them out.
What is self-care?
Self-care is a modern English buzzword that means self-love, self-nurturing, or self-maintenance. However, this care in self-care does not come from others, but from yourself. This should not be a task that you burden yourself with, but an encouragement to reflect on your own needs. Many people tend to neglect their own wishes and needs day after day. Caring for someone else is often easier than caring for oneself. We often expect much more from ourselves than we would from others. We treat ourselves in a tone that we would not use with a friend. Self-care is meant to remind us to treat ourselves as we would a friend. Self-care ultimately ensures that we treat ourselves lovingly and handle ourselves, our strength, and our feelings mindfully. This loving attention benefits us and our health.
The basics of self-care
Understanding one's own needs is something wonderful and positive. It has nothing to do with selfishness or navel-gazing, but is a valuable tool to ensure our well-being. How can this succeed? There is no general recipe, but tips on how to realize what is good for us. We use everything that suits us and our everyday lives and leave everything else aside.
The most important basics for self-care are:
• Enough breaks
• Good sleep
• Balanced nutrition
It's not about recommending specific exercises, like yoga or meditation. We want to give you fundamental impulses to focus your perspective and thoughts on yourself, at least temporarily.
How we create self-care time for ourselves
It is often incredibly difficult for all of us to make time for ourselves. But at the same time, it is so healing to regularly take time for oneself. No matter for what – whether you want to use it for exercise, relaxation, or reflection – every activity has its raison d'être. You will see, after you have taken time for yourself, you can return to your everyday life strengthened.
Take (phone) breaks: As practical and entertaining as our smartphones are, the constant availability that comes with them is stressful. So consciously put your phone aside from time to time and give your thoughts a little more space. This brings clarity, more awareness of the here and now, and helps to bring some calm into everyday life.
Exercise: The inner couch potato is not always easy to outwit. But it doesn't have to be high-performance sports either – just moderate, brisk walking stimulates thoughts and the body. Exercise releases emotions, has an almost therapeutic effect, and the fresh air usually also brings back a clarity that quickly gets lost in everyday life.
Time for your care routine: When was the last time you really took time for your personal care? An extensive bath, a soothing scrub, and a moisturizing body care product provide an incredibly good feeling in your own body. Try it out & combine your me-time with an extensive care routine.
Create rituals: Of course, rituals are not just annual routines, but can be practiced daily, every Sunday, or at irregular intervals. A ritual can be very personal and pursue a specific intention. Most of the time, it is the intention to find inner peace, clarity, and strength. Or to reach a goal by consciously evoking security. Or, conversely, to let go of something old. Creating rituals is an important step and will help you to practice self-care regularly and maintain a rhythm.
YES to yourself: Every now and then it is important to say NO to others and instead choose yourself. Because if your energy reserves are exhausted, you cannot be there for others either. Nobody is helped by that. Get to know your limits, accept them, and learn to defend them. That is not selfish; it is even very healthy. Dare to stand up for yourself.
Restful sleep: A conscious end to the day is helpful for sinking into a relaxed and peaceful sleep. You can design a self-care evening routine by, for example, turning off the TV at least 30 minutes before going to bed and instead picking up a book or with relaxing music, a soothing care routine, with a small gratitude exercise - however your evening ritual for a good night's sleep looks, take the time you need for it. Or try our Beautyhacker Dream Dust if you have trouble falling asleep. Nutrition: Taking care of your own body also means regularly providing it with good and healthy food. Of course, you can treat yourself now and then. But it is important to feel good after eating, to provide the body with the necessary nutrients and to drink enough water. Self-care should replenish your energy stores. Junk food often has the opposite effect. Eat intuitively what you feel like, but listen to yourself and decide consciously and carefully. Positive side effect: cooking. Home-cooked food tastes even better, and you decide which ingredients and products are used. Besides, cooking can be extremely calming, and you get a sense of achievement when you can enjoy the fresh meal at the end. Keyword: enjoy – eat slowly and consciously taste! This way we focus our concentration on the meal, away from everyday stress. By the way: Our skin also loves good ingredients.
